Nansemond Suffolk Academy Case Study

One Resource. One Platform. Multiple Buildings.

Established in 1966, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent college preparatory school with two locations in Suffolk, VA, that serves students in pre-kindergarten though Grade 12. The main campus consists of five main buildings, creating security challenges as students and teachers need to move freely between buildings to share resources.

Chesapeake Controls has been instrumental in finding ways for our school to utilize the existing facilities more efficiently, while also providing remote capability to streamline control and access over the multiple buildings that makeup our campus. With the addition of the card access system, our parents, students, faculty and staff feel confident that only individuals with the proper credentials can move freely in and out of the building once classes begin.”

The Goals

  • Increase campus security
  • Standardize on a common platform
  • Monitor and manage multiple building systems with minimal staff requirements
  • Reduce utility costs

The Challenges

  • Open campus (multiple buildings)
  • No energy manager on staff
  • HVAC equipment past useful life
  • Most equipment running 24/7
  • Campus hosts multiple events outside of normal school hours

The Solution

  • Installation of a Honeywell WEBs-AX Security platform, controlling HVAC, card access and CCTV
  • Implementation of a scheduled HVAC preventative maintenance program

The Results

  • Restricted building access during schools hours while allowing only authorized employees and students to move safely between buildings
  • Cameras and intercoms at main entry points  allow for screening of visitors before they are allowed access
  • System monitoring and scheduling with standard web browser (including smartphone or tablet)
  • Email critical equipment alarms to NSA staff and Chesapeake Controls dispatch
  • Reduced equipment run time and lower utility costs resulting from daily, holiday and special event scheduling
  • Lower maintenance costs and increased HVAC equipment efficiency with proper preventative maintenance program
